CM to CBM formula

CBM = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 1,000,000 × Quantity. Each side is divided by 100 to convert cm to meters, which is the same as dividing the product by one million. You can also think of it as: 1,000,000 cm³ = 1 m³.

Example 1 — Standard export carton

• Carton: 60 × 40 × 30 cm
• Volume per carton = 60 × 40 × 30 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.072 CBM
• 200 cartons → 0.072 × 200 = 14.4 m³ (a healthy LCL booking)
• Air freight volumetric weight (÷5000) = 72,000 ÷ 5000 = 14.4 kg per carton

Example 2 — Small e-commerce parcel

• Box: 35 × 25 × 15 cm
• Volume per box = 35 × 25 × 15 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.0131 CBM
• 500 boxes → 6.56 m³ — fits comfortably as LCL
• Courier divisor 6000 → DIM weight per box = 2.19 kg

Example 3 — Full container in cm

• Carton: 50 × 50 × 50 cm = 0.125 CBM
• Fit in a 20ft container (≈28 usable CBM): ~224 cartons

Worked example — Shenzhen e-commerce consolidation

• Step 1 — Supplier A ships 400 apparel cartons at 60 × 40 × 40 cm = 0.096 CBM each → 38.4 CBM.
• Step 2 — Supplier B ships 150 accessory cartons at 35 × 25 × 20 cm = 0.0175 CBM each → 2.625 CBM.
• Step 3 — Add both consignments at the Shenzhen CFS: 38.4 + 2.625 = 41.025 CBM.
• Step 4 — 40HC usable volume ≈ 68 CBM, so this fills ~60% — either top up with a third supplier or downgrade to LCL.
• Step 5 — Confirm chargeable ocean weight: 41.025 CBM > total 8.2 t, so freight bills on CBM.

FAQs — CBM in centimeters

Why do Chinese factories always quote in cm and not meters?

Cartons rarely exceed 100 cm on any side, so cm gives whole numbers instead of decimals (e.g. 60 cm reads cleaner than 0.6 m on a packing list). CFS operators and NVOCCs in China, Vietnam and India all use cm on measurement certificates.

My supplier sent dimensions in mm — how do I convert to CBM?

Divide each side by 10 to convert mm to cm, then use L × W × H ÷ 1,000,000. Or convert directly: L × W × H in mm ÷ 1,000,000,000 = CBM.

Do I use inner or outer carton dimensions for CBM?

Always outer (master carton) dimensions. Ocean and air carriers measure the space your carton occupies inside the container or ULD, including corrugation.
